“Be Not Afraid”

In Joshua 1:9, we read this commandment from God, “Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the Lord your God, am with you wherever you go”.

In the dictionary we find that fear means a state of dread or a feeling of alarm or panic. Such a very small word; only 4 letters and yet it can incapacitate the strongest among us. We’ve all experienced it many times throughout our lives, maybe even some of us are experiencing it today.

Sometimes the fears we experience are rational and other times they are not, but they are always real to the person trapped in that fear. No matter whether they are rational or irrational, God our Father says in no uncertain terms, “Be Not Afraid!”

When we allow fear to overtake us we are basically saying that we do not trust God to take care of whatever situation we are involved in that frightens us. He’s just not big enough or strong enough to handle my fears. Or he doesn’t love or care about me enough to do that. In Psalm 37: 23-25, David said, “The Lord guides a man (or woman)in the way he (she)should go and protects those who please him. (24) If they fall they will not stay down, because the Lord will help them up. (25) I am an old man now; I have lived a long time, but I have never seen a good man(or woman) abandoned by the Lord or his(her) children begging for food.”

We choose whether fear will control us or not. When we allow fear to take control, Satan claps his hands in glee for he has succeeded in paralyzing another Christian into ineffectiveness. Instead of a warrior for the kingdom of God, we become a spiritual wimp.

If He is wherever we are and if He is God, the Master of the Universe, we need not fear. For He is speaking these words to each of us:

  • Be not afraid of sickness.

  • Be not afraid of aging.

  • Be not afraid of dying.

  • Be not afraid of failure.

  • Be not afraid of rejection.

  • Be not afraid of your adversaries.

  • Be not afraid of ANYTHING.

For I the Lord your God am with you.

My prayer is that we will embrace this message, apply it to our hearts and in doing so, will become less fearful and more fearless, and consequently more effective Christians. Instead of being on the defensive in our battles with Satan we will be on the offensive. I want to stand up to my fears, as David stood before Goliath and say, “I will defeat you for I come against you in the power of the Lord God Almighty against whom you have no authority.” Let’s put Satan on the run together.

Shalom, Betty
